What does mai pen rai mean?
ไม่เป็นไร (mai pen rai) means “it is okay,” “never mind,” “no problem,” or “do not worry about it,” depending on the situation. Thai speakers use it to reassure someone, accept a small inconvenience, or respond graciously to an apology.

The RTGS spelling is mai pen rai. Learner systems may write it as mâi bpen rai to show more pronunciation detail. You may also see mai bpen rai in informal learning materials. These spellings point to the same Thai phrase.
Listen to the normal-speed recording first, then compare the slower version. The first word, ไม่, carries a falling tone; copying the rhythm of the complete phrase is more useful than reading the Latin letters as English.
When Thai people use it
- After a small apology: a colleague bumps your chair or arrives a little late.
- To reassure someone: a minor mistake has not caused a serious problem.
- To let something go: the issue is not worth further concern.
- Sometimes after thanks: the sense is closer to “no problem” than a formal “you’re welcome.”
A useful caution for teachers
Mai pen rai does not mean that every problem should be ignored. If a student is hurt, a safeguarding issue arises, or an administrative mistake needs correcting, respond to the problem directly. Use the phrase for reassurance and ordinary inconveniences, not to dismiss something important.
